How to Manage IAP and Subscription Pricing

app store connect

Pricing is a growth lever and an operational risk. Changing a subscription or IAP price across countries should feel more like a reviewed release than a spreadsheet edit.

The workflow matters because pricing mistakes are hard to reason about after the fact. If you change too many products and countries at once, you will not know what helped, what hurt, or what simply failed to publish correctly.

Separate products by type

Consumable IAPs, non-consumables, and subscriptions behave differently. Keep the workflow separate so product IDs, billing behavior, and territory prices do not get mixed.

Also separate new-user pricing from existing subscriber implications. Subscription changes can involve grandfathering, consent rules, offer timing, and renewal behavior. Do not treat every product like a simple one-time price point.

Start with a small country set

If you are localizing price, start with a few high-opportunity countries. Verify the changes in App Store Connect before expanding.

Choose countries with a reason: existing traffic, weak paid conversion, meaningful purchasing-power difference, strong product fit, or competitor pricing that suggests the current offer is out of market.

Think in conversion, not discounting

Lower territory pricing can increase total revenue if the current converted price is unaffordable. The question is whether the market was blocked by price friction.

If the bottleneck is screenshots, metadata, or onboarding, price changes may hide the real problem. Diagnose the funnel first, then change price where the evidence points to purchase friction.

Record every change

Store product, country, old price, new price, date, and reason. Without a change log, future analytics are hard to interpret.

Preview before committing

Before publishing a price update, review product ID, display name, territory, old price, new price, subscription group, and effective date. This is especially important when several IAPs have similar names.

Check after publishing

Verify the change in App Store Connect and then measure country-level conversion, revenue, refunds, and retention. Pricing work is not done when the value changes; it is done when you know whether the market responded.
